A couple weeks ago a friend phoned to ask me if I could use some of her barn wood. She and her husband were refurbishing some of the buildings on their farm and there was a stack of lumber from a section of barn that had to be rebuilt. She said they were going to burn it, but recalled that I had said I could use some old barn wood for making picture frames. Two days later I pulled in at her place, meeting up with her and her husband to take a look at the pile of wood. It...

When my husband and I married two years ago, he flew to Los Angeles to pick me up. We stuffed my Ford Explorer full of as many of my belongings and as much of my clothing as we could possibly get it to hold, secured everything else in my storage unit and headed off toward New York on a nine-day cross-country honeymoon drive. My friend was named Rudy, and oddly enough he was the younger brother of the guy who had been my boyfriend the year before. Some of my best times in high school were with Rudy, and hopefully the same was true for him of the time he spent with...

The world changes swiftly from the gray-brown of a lifeless, after-snow-melt winter to the earliest burst of green liveliness that comes in spring. Golden light filled mornings and evenings cast long streaks of brilliant, reviving light cutting through tree limbs and shrub branches, glowing with fresh little pale green leaves. Dandelions are already blooming in the yard, the flowering crab apple tree out near our barn is covered in deep, dusty red leaves and tiny buds. Rhoda (my heirloom tree peony) is crowded with more than thirty buds amid abundant new growth. And I saw my first rainbow of the...

Yes, I said on Wednesday that I would write more this week, so here I am to keep that appointment. Have a cuppa with me? I am on a mission to publish my first knitting book by the end of this summer. It will be a book of hand knit Christmas Stocking patterns, the firefly way. It is an ambitious mission because I do have writing clients I must attend to, my fine art paintings to continue creating, and my husband, daughter, and dog to continue to attend to as needed here at home. I must design and knit one...
