Of all of my memories of school as a small child, all things related to books and reading and being read to are some of the richest in my treasure chest. I loved paper, the sound of a library book with its heavy plastic protective cover closing with a soft yet decisive thud, and carrying a stack of books to the librarian's desk with my mother by my side getting ready for summer reading. I remember certain books with peculiar clarity such as Danny and the Dinosaur, those little Dick and Jane books, and Harold and the Purple Crayon. The...

I remember so crisply the moment when I was sitting out back on the stoop the day after we arrived "home" following our cross-country honeymoon drive and watched as my new husband circled the barn on his tractor and saying in somewhat stupefied* wonder, "I live on a farm. I live on a farm, and my husband drives a tractor."

It was a thrill when we saw that first little green sprout. I told Sweet Pea, "Your pumpkin patch is coming along now!" and she gave me a big, happy smile.

When my children were babies my parents tried to tell me how very different it is to be grandparents as opposed to being parents. I did my best to understand what they meant, but I realize now that I needed to be a grandparent myself to actually get it. So, Dad and Mom ... I get it now.
