(NOTE:  If you arrived here via my email about side dishes and the knit along, that post is here.  Sorry, I inserted the wrong link in the email.) This weekend was my grand-daughter's second birthday ... what a treat! My daughter did a wonderful job of putting on a special birthday party for her, filled with all kinds of magic and surprises. A few family friends joined us all for an afternoon of good food, pleasant chatter, and plenty of laughter. By the way, I have made slow progress, but progress just the same, on the blanket I am knitting...

Saturday evening there was an unexpected show fall that brought us several inches of dry, powdery snow overnight. There was no wind during the night, so the snow was still blanketing the branches of the trees in the morning. I love waking up when it is still dark in the winter time and being surprised visually once the sun comes up with whatever might have happened overnight. It has been quite...

Two days ago at the break of day I saw that all of the branches of all of the trees were covered in white, snowy ice. As soon as the sun was up high enough to hit the trees our world exploded tiny little sparkly bits of magic. This happens once or twice each winter, or it has for the five winters I have been here. The trees along the river bank become especially sparkly with ice twinkles, amplified by the sun light bouncing off the white snow along the frozen river that lights the branches up from beneath. It...

The foods that bind us

I made twenty dozen of these scrumptious cookies to send off to loved ones this Valentine's Day.  A chocolate-based cookie, I used premium bittersweet cocoa powder, doubling the amount the recipe called for.  In addition to a standard dose of semi-sweet mini chocolate chips, I added one bag of large Ghirardelli bittersweet chocolate morsels so that each cookie would have one or two extra chunks of premium bittersweet chocolate. With other interesting ingredients like whiskey and coffee, these cookies seemed the perfect choice for a Valentine confection. Everyone who received them seemed to agree. I gave my husband his own...

A walk in the city

My latest tribute to Etsy sellers ... a Treasury titled, "A walk in the city." Here we are on the farm, out in the country enjoying a beautiful winter of abundant snow, cold temperatures ... beautiful weather and cozy times in the house. However, feeling a touch of cabin fever I imagined for a few minutes that I was driving and walking along city streets. Side Bar: The smell of homemade bread is wafting its way through the house, from the kitchen, reaching me here in the livingroom ... mmm.  Just a sec, I have to take it out and...
